DevBlog #21 - Getting the Woodland House ready

Greetings and welcome to this week's DevBlog.

This week we'll be taking a closer look at the Woodland house. Created by Atom Republic Artist, Paul Rance. The Woodland House is a spectacular private space which is located deep inside the forest, overlooking a peaceful lake.

By now, you've all seen the private spaces video on our YouTube Channel. Now it's time to start bringing them into Atom Universe (starting with the Woodland House), but before we can that do we've got make sure a few things work first.

Firstly and probably the most important thing, setting up the collision barrier. By doing this the avatar is free to walk around and isn't going to fall through the floor or wander through the walls. It can be quite a time consuming task as you've not only got the wall and floors to consideration. You've also got to take various pieces of furniture and design features to consider as well.

Next we've got to the avatar interacting with the environment, as personal space your avatar is going to be living here. They have to be able to sit down and relax, or maybe even sleep in a bed. Afterwards, we've got to into bug fixing mode and need to ensure that there are no game breaking bugs that are going to affect the player experience.

  1. Another great DevBlog this week Dave! I've loved the Woodland Hills House ever since I saw the WIP images and video walkthroughs last year. It is the first space I saw being developed for the game (minus the initial concept images for the Mirage House from SubD Studio). I have been amazed with the attention to detail of the space and I'm excited to be able to access it in the game. The Mirage House that we could access in the Alpha is very nice, but the Woodland House is a much larger space in which to move and interact. What is said here about the collisions makes complete sense and while we have seen it not checked between avatars, I agree it is so much more important when interacting with furniture and preventing an avatar from going through walls or falling through floors of a personal space. I'm looking forward to seeing the furniture interactions that will allow our avatars to recline in chairs/couches or lay down on beds. I can't wait for this space to be accessible in the game! The new travel hub sounds interesting and looking forward to seeing what that looks like. I know all that work probably isn't as fun as fixing bugs, but we all know that is important too! I've reported many across the last few builds and hope they are all fixed soon, but overall the game still looks great and I still feel excellent progress is being made. As far as future events go, I think our weekly Community Meetups have been very successful and the recent addition of the bi-weekly Block Parties have been great too! As always, thanks to all the hard work of the Atom Republic/Atom Universe team. Keep it up! :)
